Just over 200 human/canine teams took part in the 11th annual Sun Dog’s K-9 Uphill held this past Saturday, April 8th at “Buttsniffmilk” Mountain. The deepest bases and warmest spring temperatures in the history of the event were enjoyed by participants who sported Hawaiian shirts, shorts and baseball hats as temperatures soared into the low 60’s during the post-uphill party on the patio at Bumps. Prior to the BBQ and Erik’s Epic raffle, participants conquered the 2 mile, 2000 vertical foot climb to the east summit Finish on snowshoes, skis or lightweight traction devices while being hoisted up the hill by their hearty K-9 teammates.

 

In an unprecedented finish, the dominant male and female teams tied for first place overall with times of 27 minutes and 7 seconds. Hailing from Leadville, Husky dog Otto and owner Fritz Howard crossed the line with friends Crusher and Stephanie Dwyer, last year’s female division winners. Last year Otto and Fritz were edged out by a whisker (one second) by Team Atlas snowshoe racer Bernie Boetcher of Silt and his adopted demo dog, Reno. Local huskies Maia and Wailer, with teammate Bob Sharp in tow, took second in the male division. Another former K-9 Uphill winning team; Michael Otte and Jewels, were third amongst the big dogs. Rounding out the top three in the female division were Sue Jacobsen and Murphy from Carbondale and Robin Pfautz (formerly Severy) and Maggie from Carbondale.

 

After snowshoeing, skiing and sledding down the mountain, event participants refueled at the popular Hot Dog Barbeque on the sun soaked patio at Bumps. Almost everyone left with a prize from Erik’s Epic raffle and memories of an epic day with their best friends. Sun Dog’s K-9 Uphill, presented by Sun Dog Athletics, and sponsored by the Aspen Daily News, Aspen Skiing Co., Atlas Snow-Shoe, OllyDog, Alpine Bank, Powebar, Take 2 Video, William Lukes and Associoates and Under Armour will benefit the new Aspen/Pitkin County Animal Shelter and Valley Dog Rescue.
